Graham, being our newest member, gave us a talk about his work with the Salvation Army, a job he clearly enjoys very much, especially with all the willing volunteers he has working with him. He is the third generation of his family to be in the Salvation Army, having been a Youth Worker, although he had previously worked in finance.
In 1998 he was asked to develop a Community Project at Shakespeare House in Southwick. which he was pleased to do. Having ascertained what facilities were needed, he sought suitable staff and volunteers to run the activities. Over the years these have continued to develop so that they now have a wide range on offer to the community, including: two after school clubs; life long learning Craft groups; a community cafe; community transport with a 9 seater mini-bus; an IT suite to help with employment; community development linking with people for caravan holidays and volunteering.
There is also network development and partnership work, particularly with the Fire Brigade and Sun FM.
Other regular, ongoing work involves running a Food Bank, an Easter Egg appeal and a Christmas Gift appeal.
The Salvation Army motto is 'Save to Serve' and Graham leads a major effort in serving the local community.
