Len joined us to give us an update on End Polio Now, which our club has supported financially over many years..

PDG Len Burns

Past District governor Len Burns from Newcastle upon Tyne rotary, joined us on Zoom to give us an update on End Polio Now.

He outlined Rotary's history, from 1985 when RI agreed to take on the task of ridding the world of this debilitating disease.  At that time there were 355,000 cases per year in 108 countries.  Over the last 35 years it is estimated that 20 million volunteer hours have been spent, with 8 million children vaccinated.

$17 billion has been spent of which $2.1 million has been raised by Rotary International.

There are now only 2 countries where the disease is still present, Afghanistan with 29 cases in 2019 and 53 case to date in 2020. and Pakistan with 147 case in 2019 and 79 cases to date in 2020.

Rotary has 6 partners in the project, including the World Health Organisation, UNICEF, GAVI Alliance and the Gates Foundation.  A strong infra-structure has been built up over the years and this is now being used to monitor and overcome corona virus COVID-19, which should make a huge difference to the time taken to make progress in this effort.

Len was thanked for his talk by Brian Franklin.
