Half a dozen Rotarians, with the help of some willing parents, prepared the ground for children to plant crocuses in front of the memorial garden and along the bank.
The children had been told about the disease of polio and the reason for the planting of purple crocuses, at an assembly earlier in the week. We were able to explain how children abroad who have been immunised, dip their finger in a purple dye, to confirm that they have been treated.
Each class throughout the school came out in turn during the whole day and enjoyed putting about 10 bulbs each in the trenches. They also scattered seeds for wild flowers in the memorial garden.
When the children see the crocuses in bloom next February and March, they will think again about other children who have been saved from catching the terrible disease of polio. We hope that there will be a beautiful display in Spring for all to enjoy.
We are grateful to Mel Adams and other members of staff who made the arrangements and assisted on the day.
