Lynne Symonds was a teacher and is an honorary fellow at Sunderland University. She was born in Sunderland, but now lives in Norfolk with her farmer husband. Some 18 years ago she began to help children in the poor northern area of Ghana, with schooling and vocational skills. The charity is know as the Wulugu Project and it has helped tens of thousands of children. The funds raised have been used to open or re-open 30 schools and provide desks and books for these and other schools. Hostels have been provided for girls and teachers and six vocational colleges have been opened.
The work continues and building a hostel at Karaga is the next project. In thanking Lynne, we were able to give a donation towards the work of the trust.
Before Lynne had spoken to us, President Brian Franklin had awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship to a very surprised Past President Peter Calvert for all his work in the club over many years.
