Thursday morning 30th September saw over 40 children from Redby Primary School, with teachers and parents, busy planting over 1500 purple crocus bulbs in a designated grass area of Roker Park.
In the afternoon a further 46 children from Seaburn Dene Primary School came to another area of the park to plant a further 1500 bulbs.
The visit of the third group of 47 children from Dame Dorothy Street Primary School had to be postponed until Monday morning 4th October to complete the planting.
It was explained to the children by Rotarian Brian Franklin that this is to raise awareness of Rotary's long-standing efforts to eliminate polio from the world, with only 4 countries where it is still endemic. When the children have received the vaccine, they dip their forefinger in a purple dye - hence the purple crocus bulbs.
Seaburn Rotary Club was extremely grateful to the Park Ranger Alan Taylor, who made all the arrangements for the planting, including the digging of the 500 holes
