The Wonders of Acupuncture
Rotary Maidenhead Thames Club met at Fredrick's Hotel in Maidenhead on Monday 19 August 2024 for a meal and talk on "The Wonders of Acupuncture" from our special guest, Dr. Rupali Mandve.
After a delicious meal of grilled sea bass followed by a gorgeous chocolate brownie and ice cream, Dr. Mandve, who is a physiotherapist at the Hälsa Clinic in Maidenhead explained that acupuncture - the practice of inserting fine needles into the skin - is derived from traditional Chinese medicine.
Acupuncture can help release tension in the body, correct posture, and reduce stiffness, amongst other things. It is often used to treat migraines and headaches, sciatica, general fatigue, anxiety and sleeping disorders, hayfever, hormonal imbalances, vertigo, and muscle and joint conditions. It can also aid in relaxation.
In conventional acupuncture, the needles are inserted in certain parts of the body, and manipulated manually. Acupressure uses tiny magnets instead of needles to apply pressure to acupoints on the body. Electroacupuncture uses small electric currents administered through the needles.
Dr. Mandve explained that acupuncture works by releasing endorphines into the body to lessen the pain. It also stimulates the central nervous system, reduces inflammation, and improves blood circulation.
Acupuncture is often combined with physiotherapy to deal with the underlying issues in the body.
Members asked a number of questions, and left with plenty to think about. I think some of us may be attending the Hälsa Clinic soon!
