Working with the Community in Maidenhead

Community Events

It’s often said that society works better when communities work together. From food banks to flood relief, marathons to music festivals, Rotary is always making a difference in our communities. The opportunities with Rotary are endless – here’s just a few of the ways Maidenhead Thames Rotary is helping:

  • Community Christmas Lunch: Each year we work with the Holiday Inn staff and invite senior citizens from local retirement homes and other community groups such as carers to enjoy a festive lunch, inlcuding entertainment and of course a visit from Santa and his Elves to hand out presents.

  • SEND Children's Christmas Lunch & Disco: Each year we work with the Holiday Inn staff and invite the lower year students from Manor Green School to a Christmas disco including lunch, entertainment and of course a visit from Santa and his Elves to hand out presents.

  • Santa's Grotto in the Nicholsons Shopping Centre: working with the other Rotary Clubs in Maidenhead we provide manage the grotto in the town centre for a period of 4-5 weeks preceeding Christmas. We hand out gifts to all visitors and bring some festive cheer to shoppers!

Educational Initiatives

Rotary all over the world works to support education, it is one of our main areas of focus.  More than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate. That's 17% of the world's adult population.

Our goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education and increase adult literacy.

As a club we support education for all children with a number of initiatives, including:

  • Schools Poetry Recital: working closely with RBWM Children's Services, we support 4 alternate primary schools annually through funding a resident poet to provide workshops to the students.  They are taught how to write a poem and then take part in a presentation evening to showcase their work to parents, staff and siblings.

  • Rotary Young Writers Competition: This annual competition encourages young authors from local schools to be creative by producing an essay which they get to read at the event held at the Holiday Inn Maidenhead. A Writer's Workshop featuring published authors support the event and give aspiring young authors the opportunity to learn how fun words can be and feed their imagination.

  • Essay Competition & Reading: working closely with RBWM Children's Services, we invite all primary schools to participate.  Students write essays which are then reviewed by qualified volunteers and winners from each school selected.  All selected winners, their famlies and teachers, are invited to a special presentation evening where they read their winning essay and receive their awards, presented by the Mayor of Windsor & Maidenhead.

  • Reading Volunteers: We organise volunteers who go into local primary schools for an hour each week to listen to children read and to help them improve their literacy..

  • Schools Mathemagical Competition: We organise and fund this primary schools maths comeptition which is run in conjunction with RBWM and leading maths teachers from schools in the borough.  Children from the schools battle it out, solving four challenging problems, to become the coveted "Mathmagicians".

  • Mighty Maths Competition: working closely with RBWM Children's Services, we invite all Year 2 pupils in Maidenhead to participate in this fun competition to help improve their mathimatical minds.  A fun day with winning teams and individuals being presented with awards at the end of the day.

Additional Service Projects

The following initiatives are supported whenever volunteer resources and additional funding becomes available:

  • Sustainability: We are exploring with RBWM Children's Services setting up an Environmental Sustainability projects competition among Primary Schools.
  • Junior Technology Tournament: We are exploring with RBWM Children's Services setting up a Junior Technology competition among Years 5&6 to promote STEM in Schools.
  • Adult Literacy: We are hopin to initiate regular publicity campaigns to secure additional Readers for Primary Schools in collaboration with RBWM Children's Services and the Maidenhead Advertiser, and ultimately consider extending this to adult Literacy.
  • Support of any additional specific projects or causes as and when identified.

Charity Funding Support Requests

In addition to supporting specific charities, consideration will also be given for supporting various other local, national and international charities that require Rotary support to make a difference in the Community.  If you woudl like to nominate a charity or community group for support please do get in touch.
