Bydales Academy students and Saltburn Rotary Club worked together to restore Lisa Jacklin’s Memorial Garden, creating a beautiful haven for people and pollinators.

Lisa Jacklin’s Memorial Garden at Bydales Academy was formally reopened on Wednesday 1 July following a remarkable restoration by students and members of Saltburn Rotary Club.

Work began in April with just three students, but the team quickly grew into a dedicated group of 12 pupils from Years 7 and 8. Meeting every Wednesday after school, the students worked alongside Rotary members to weed, clear and replant the garden.

The collaboration formed part of Rotary’s wider Operation Pollinator project, which encourages the creation of more sustainable, natural habitats where bees and other vital insects can thrive.

Apple Orchard Nurseries kindly donated a memorial silver birch tree, providing a fitting finishing touch to this special space.

The Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland, Councillor Ceri Cawley, joined students, staff and Rotary members to formally reopen the garden.

The restored garden is a wonderful tribute to Lisa and a testament to the students’ hard work, pride and commitment. Further work to maintain and develop the garden is planned for September.
