A Sand Dam we helped to build......

Sand dams empower dryland communities to transform their own lives and land.

When people have access to clean water, they can take their future into their own hands, live sustainably, and work their way out of poverty with dignity. (Sand Dams Worldwide)

October 2025

We contributed to a Sand Dam at Watiwa ni Watiwa earlier this year and the Dam was completed September 2025. The eventual donors were:-

  • RC of Woking
  • RC of Clamart Le-Plessis-Robinson (French partners of RC of Woking)
  • RC of Woking District
  • RC of Chertsey
  • RC of Titsey and District
  • RC of Brighton and Soiree and
  • RC of Caterham

The local and International partners were:-

  • Africa Sand Dam Foundation (ASDF - local/regional experts)
  • Sand Dams Worldwide (coordinate between us (DISC & the donors), ASDF anonymous donor of 50% and the local working group (villagers) + Medicor (50% anonymous donor)
  • Medicor Australia

All the donors are inscribed on the concrete plaque on the Sand Dam for posterity (forever or duration of the dam - estimated 100 years)

The total raised for the dam to be built was £31, 517.

Some statistics:-

  • Sand Dams enabled by Sand Dams Worldwide = 1,424
  • People with access to clean water = 1,230,562
  • Sand dams built with the support of Rotary = 79
  • Sand dams built with the support of this District = 9

Benefits:-

  • Clean, drinking water throughout the year (to the UNESCO standard )
  • Reduction of mosquitos, malaria and other diseases
  • Instead of walking 4-5 hours to collect the water, it is within reach and releases time for children to attend school, agriculture, etc.
  • as part of funding, we also provide seedling for tree planting and seeds for vegetables - this improves health and generates income
  • As opposed to extraction, this reduces pressure on water resources and raises water table - new green area for the local population
