Find out what Titsey Rotarians did during 2018.....

Girls Attack get a new marquee (September 2018)

Back in early 2017, Titsey Rotary Club voted to donate £500 from the money earned working at the Oxted Beer Festival to Girls Attack, to buy a marquee for use at their training sessions.  It took a while to arrange, but the marquee has finally been delivered and is now in use.  It has proved a real hit with the Girls Attack members and their coaches.

Girls Attack is an inclusive, friendly and competitive netball club for minis (6-8 years old), juniors (8-14 years) and ladies (all ages!).  They are run by Maggie Morley and Lynn Stables, who are England Netball qualified coaches and are based in Oxted.

Titsey Rotary Club's TROYS funding scheme also provides financial support so that Girls Attack can offer free coaching to some local children.

Boot Fairs (June and August 2018)

Our Oxted Boot Fairs this year were held in June and August.  In June the weather was almost too kind to us, it was so hot!  That didn't stop the owners of nearly 250 cars and vans selling everything from books to bicycles and from toys to tools.  In August the weather was fairly kind (dry but windy) and nearly 200 cars and vans turned up.  There were lots of lovely people buying and selling on both occasions, making the events most enjoyable for all concerned.  Between the two events we raised £5,570 which will be used to support charities and good causes, many of them local ones.  Thank you to everyone who came to the Oxted Boot Fairs, whether as a buyer or a seller.  We hope to see you again in 2019 - 9 June and 18 August.

Titsey Rotarians go back to school (June 2018)

Titsey Rotarian at workFollowing an appeal from Sarah George, the Headteacher of Hurst Green Infants School, to clear away overgrown brambles and nettles from the school's playing field area, six members of Titsey Rotary Club rode to the rescue in May and June 2018.  Armed with tools and safety gear, and with more enthusiasm than skill, the volunteers got to grips with the weeds, helped along by coffee and biscuits povided by school bursar Sophie Elliott.

Easter Fancy Dress Collection (March 2018)

On Easter Saturday 31 March 2018 several members of Titsey Rotary walked in fancy dress from Oxted to Hurst Green, calling at all the public houses along the way and raising money for local mental health charities and Clockwork.  They gave out Easter eggs to children along their route and distributed lots of cheer and fun to passers-by.  At the end of the day they had raised over £1100 through sponsorship and bucket collections on the streets and in the pubs for their efforts.

Windmill Manor - Valentine’s Day Afternoon Tea (February 2018)

On 14 February, eight Rotarians and nine Titsey “Ladies” laid on a Valentine’s Day afternoon tea for residents of Windmill Manor care home.

The residents were divided into three groups, based on their ability to engage and the Titsey team provided a slide show (prepared and presented by President Roger), a sing-along (led, I am told, by Melodius Malcolm), while a few of us focussed on holding simple conversations with the residents with more challenging communication skills.

After these activities, tea was served, including some most excellent cakes and scones (which were sampled, Mary Berry-like, by the undersigned - purely in the interest of science, of course).

Finally, Rotarians presented the residents, - and some of the care staff - with red roses, in celebration of Valentine’s Day.

Our visit was greatly appreciated by many of the residents and we were warmly thanked by staff members, who said that the residents and staff alike really enjoyed the variety in routine that our visit afforded.
