The finals of the Westhill & District Primary School Chess Championship 2014, organised by the Rotary Club of Westhill & District, took place at
The competition was open to children P3 to P7 and the participating schools were Skene and the three Westhill Primary Schools. During the preceding months, up to 100 children battled it out to become champion of their school and to represent their school in the finals.
After some very close matches, the winner was judged to be Angus Flett from Elrick School. He received the trophy on behalf of his school from Moira Gordon, Westhill Rotary Youth Convenor, as well as receiving an individual trophy.
The runner-up was Kalyan Kante from Westhill Primary. The other finalists each received a medal.
Special mention must be made to Rotarian Rev Matthew Rodger, who has been coaching and encouraging the children for the past three years and was also highly involved in organising this competition.
