The Rotary Club of Kew Gardens are celebrating a landmark charitable achievement as one of hundreds of Rotary clubs from across the country who have together contributed over £1 million since 2011 to Lendwithcare.
Lendwithcare is a microfinance charity which enables people in the UK to make small loans to entrepreneurs from poor communities around the world.
Mercedes Chamba is a 52-year-old microentrepreneur who has been running her grocery shop for the past 13 years or so. She and her husband live in the small town of Malacatos in southern Ecuador with their two children.
Mercedes says that her monthly sales are around $2,000. She requested a loan to buy extra stock for her shop prior to the busy Christmas period. She wants to buy sacks of rice, sugar, and noodles and expects to repay her loan over 6 months.
