The Rotary clubs of Felixstowe Landguard and Durban Bay have joined forces to provide an IT training centre for the not for profit organisation, Woza Moya, in the deep rural community of Ufafa Valley in KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa.
The area has a high dependency on the productive population to maintain support for children and the elderly. Youth unemployment is high, at over 40% and 80% of those employed earn less than $100 per month. Education standards are low due to poorly resourced schools which results in a high drop out rate.
Proficiency in Information Technology (IT) is an absolute requirement for success in today's technology-driven society. However, many youths in South Africa have no access to IT facilities or learning opportunities. This project is helping to change this by providing the IT training centre.
The training centre will deliver accredited training in business skills, necessary to gain employment. It will also provide training and support for people to start up and sustain viable businesses, thereby employing themselves and providing jobs for others.
