Felixstowe Rotary Club International Project 2015-16
Horizon Farm Trust Rain Water Harvesting Project
The Horizon Farm Trust is a registered welfare organisation which provides accommodation for intellectually impaired adults on a 30 acre property in Shongweni, Kwa-zulu Natal, South Africa.
It is vital that they have sufficient water to be able to continue and expand their services. They currently draw all their water from a borehole and two wells as no Municipal water is supplied to the valley. They have a policy of using alternative energy and resources where possible. The collection of rain water is a resource that will help meet their current and future needs.
The project enabled rainwater harvesting by the provision of water storage tanks (called Jo Jo tanks) to collect rainwater from large roofs at Horizon Farm Trust. This water is used by all the residents for washing, laundry, cooking, flushing toilets, cleaning and vegetable garden irrigation.
The project was undertaken by the Rotary clubs of Felixstowe Landguard, Durban Bay, Durban Thekwini and Durban with support from the Rotary Foundation.
