The Common Room (formerly known as The Mining Institute) fhas recently been reopened after a major refurbishment. We had a very interesting tour of the building. President Peter wrote in his monthly letter, "Those who were unable to join the visit to The Common Room on Friday last week missed a real treat. Not only was the revamped building a sumptuous treat, but also we had the unforgettable pleasure of a mini lecture by John Gillespie, as he placed his hands on a very rare book of drawings by Thomas Telford, one of only three in existence. It seems that The Common Room has one copy, a second is in a Church Library in North West Scotland, and the owner of the third is no other than.......mmmm....answers on a postcard please to JHH"
The carving above the door into the library is particularly fine. A video describing the carving of the River God may be seen on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rYCyT6aHmA
