Trip To Gibside

One fine evening in June Past President Peter Firth, who is a volunteer worker with the National Trust at Gibside Estate,  led a group from the Rotary Club of Newcastle upon Tyne on a guided tour of what the National Trust describes as an “Eighteenth Century Pleasure Garden.” Gibside, formerly a property of the Bowes-Lyon family from whom our Queen is descended, is said to be an important example of the development of the English Landscape Garden. George Bowes M.P., who was one of the North-East’s major coal producers, created the gardens between 1729 and 1760. Though the house is now roofless, there are several outstanding buildings and walks.

The tour, which was arranged by the Club’s Community and Vocational Service Committee, started in the Palladian Chapel with a brief talk about the development of the gardens. Members of the National trust staff then gave a conducted tour including the Walled Garden, the Long Walk, the Hall and the recently restored Stable Block.

The evening ended with supper, served in the tea-room, and all agreed that it was a very enjoyable evening.
Following our visit we made a donation of £180, to enable a the National Trust to take group of young people with an inner city background to have a weekend of activities on the estate
