Visit to Dewentcote Steel Furnace

Wed, Jul 13th 2011 at 12:00 am - 2:00 am

We arranged a guided visit to the Derwentcote Steel Furnace, in the Derwent valley near the hamlet of Hamsterley Mill.

The Projects Committee of our Club arranged a visit to an historic  steel furnace near Rowlands Gill in the valley of the river Derwent.  Built in the 1720s, Derwentcote is the earliest and most complete steel-making furnace in Britain. It produced high-grade steel for springs and cutting tools and is one of the few complete examples of this type of furnace, and is the last surviving piece of evidence of cementation steelmaking in the north-east. Derwentcote furnace went out of use by 1891 and subsequently fell into disrepair. It was restored by English Heritage in 1990.

A guided tour of the furnace was arranged for 11am on Wednesday 13th July. The tour took about 45 minutes and afterwards we all adjourned to the Miners arms at Medomsley for a very pleasant lunch.
