MORPETH ROTARY NEW MEMBER TALKS RUBBISH
Dr. Wendy Fail, along with her older brother, was brought up on her parents' 500 acre farm near Bedlington. Fame in the family was through a grandfather whose greyhound won the Waterloo Cup.
She went to KEVI at Morpeth then Dundee University to complete a degree in Environmental Management, followed by Swansea University and a post graduate degree on teaching environmental education to children and adults. She met her partner at university and they are to marry next year. She did a third degree through Northumberland College via Huddersfield University, while working full time. An early project was to use a captive breeding programme to halt the decline in harvest mice. It must have worked, as three years ago the Northumberland Wildlife Trust reported they had found several harvest mice nests, which led on to an article in the Guardian.
Her first job was with Northumberland County Council in the Rights of Way Department and as a nature reserve officer. Following a restructure she took a three month career break and completed an ocean yachtmaster course at Southampton.
A green tourism job, for well over two years, meant constant travelling and being away from home. Then to Sunderland on environmental waste awareness. She was pleased to move back to NCC to work on waste management.
Through professional interest, she is on an executive committee for The Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (LARAC), the Executive Board of the North East Waste Recycling Forum, on the NE Executive of the Chartered Institute of Waste Management and Vice Chair of KEVI Board of Governors.
She took part in the 2011-2012 round the world clipper race, did a charity wing walk in North Yorkshire, has been on the Great North Run 14 times, three of them with a new hip, and has had considerable success at golf.
Wendy was welcomed as the youngest member of Morpeth Rotary.
