The Village Water Trust has an integrated approach to the provision of clean water in rural communities in Zambia. Waterborne disease is one of the biggest causes, if not the biggest, of childhood morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. The Trust's approach comprises firstly hygiene education of the community in which a clean water supply is to be provided, then the construction of sanitation facilities (ie latrines, hand washing facilities), and finally provision of safe water where it is accessible to the whole community.
The new facilities are managed by a committee of local residents which is required to report to the local authorities and the Trust for monitoring purposes.
For the last 5 years our donations have been matched, usually by the Big Give, but in 2015 by an anonymous private donor because the Trust's allocation from the Big Give had been taken up within minutes of the website opening.
