Hello Everyone,
Apologies for a long email. As mentioned at lunch last week, Hexham
Rotary Club will be doing a 'takeover' of Tyne Green Parkrun on Saturday
20th September.
We have done this before and it involves having Rotarians fill as many
of the Parkrun volunteer positions as possible. This is a really easy
way of serving our community and obtaining some publicity. Our Rotary
incidentally also helped set up the Hexham Park Run back in 2019.
We need about:
8 Marshalls, stationed at the turns, cheering people on, and helping anyone if needed
3 barcode scanners, at the finish to record finish times
2 timekeepers, clocking every finisher
1 photographer, good opportunity for us to get some action photos
1 funnel manager, not sure what this person does, they tend to stand around with a clipboard
1 tailwalker, following the last participant
And at least 1 person (2 is better) to tell people all the good things about Rotary.
We will need to be at Tyne Green from 8:20 that morning, until the last
person finishes, usually about 10:00. No experience or actual running
required on your part and there will be a briefing at the start so you
will know what to do.
All runners and volunteers are also welcome to meet afterwards at the
Tyne Green Golf Club, for a hot or cold drink, and they also do toast
and bacon sandwiches.
If you would like to volunteer, just let me know, and let me know if you have a preference for any of the roles above.
Barcode scanners and timekeepers will need to have the parkrun app,
which is easily downloaded to your phone and easily used. We can do
this at the briefing.
All volunteers also need to register with Parkrun. You only ever need
to register once, so if you have done so before, then we just need to
confirm your barcode.
You can register at home | Tyne Green parkrun | Tyne Green parkrun. Look for 'register.'
Make sure you have handy your name, date of birth, email and postcode. That's it.
Parkrun is a charity and they have the same safeguarding and health and
safety concerns that we have, so they need to know who is helping on the
day.
Over the summer Tyne Green Parkrun has averaged well over 200
participants a week, so it is a great opportunity to advertise Rotary
events and encourage new members.
As an intro, Parkrun is a national charity that now supports over 1,300
parkruns in the UK every Saturday morning, including the one in Hexham.
These are free, timed 5k runs, with thousands of participants every
week. The first ever Parkrun was held at Bushy Park in London in
October 2004.
I have the names (and barcodes) of some of you who have volunteered
before. Please just email me if you would like to join us, or if you
have any questions. The following are already on the list. Thanks very
much.
