Presentation given by Rodney Harrex of the Australian High Commission Tourist Board 10th January 2013
Rodney gave a synopsis of the ecology, economy and climate of Australia and explained that the bush fires are a natural part of the Australian environment and that they promote regrowth of the natural vegetation.
We were told that there is a great disparity between the UK and Australia regarding climate. The climate in Australia favours outdoor activities as although they have more rainfall than the UK it is over a much shorter space of time.
Rodney told us that the economy of Australia has not suffered the same recession as much of the world as they export much of their natural resources to China. Interest rates also have remained at around five per cent in contrast to the rest of Western economies where they were at around half a per cent.
