CAROL SEET on MACULAR DEGENERATION

Carol, an account manager in a City firm, was drawn to support this charity when her father developed Macular Degeneration in one of his eyes and she felt she should know more about this common complaint to one of his eyes.  By contacting the Macular Degeneration Society(the MDS) Carol found that Macular Degeneration is quite common affecting half a million people in the UK. and is usually a condition affecting older people, most being over 60.  This eye disorder , which affects the central and most sensitive part of the retina (which is called the Macular), can lead to a progressive loss of detailed vision.

This degeneration of the retina is of two varieties - Dry Macular Degeneration  where the light sensitive cells in the retina die gradually, and Wet Macula Degeneration, where new blood vessels grow underneath the Retina, but leak fluid or blood on to the retina's light sensitive cells, again leading to loss of vision.

At the moment effective long-term treatment is limited, and the MDS chiefly focuses on raising money to support further research into this disabling complaint which affects so many older people in the UK.

Carol made her points very well and encouraged the Rotary Club to join the search for better methods of dealing with this disability, this they showed keenness to further the cause of the Macular Degeneration Society
