Halstead Rotary hosts: Living With Diabetes: awareness Evening.
The Rotary Club of Halstead hosted a very informative diabetes awareness evening at the Halstead United Reform Church
Suring the evening local GP Brian Spencer talked on this very important subject, he focused on differentiating between Type 1 which is usually inherited and Type 2 which is becoming more common given increased Obesity, particularly in children.
Professor Chris Green a Psychologist based at Broomfield hospital focused on the implications of living with a diabetic partner particularly the depression, stress and strain which can accompany the illness. The meeting highlighted the fact that many people today are walking about unaware that they have the illness.
The need to inject with Insulin up to 5 times daily is sometimes hard to take and the meeting focused on the need for a more understanding personal relationship.
Diabetes UK spoke of a North Essex support initiative, those with Diabetes were encouraged to take part in a support group initiative.
Rotarian Keith Brownlie who hosted the evening believed the event put a lot of facts on the table and sought to challenge some of the Myths and factual inaccuracies about diabetes,
The diabetic nurse Karen from the Elizabeth Courtauld practice made an excellent presentation on the practical implication for those recently diagnosed patients.
Rotarian President Mike Prince thanked the audience and encouraged a healthy debate on this subject.
