Community Litter Pick

Community Groups come together to undertake Litter pick across the town

On Sunday 2nd August Members of Blair in Bloom, BRAN, the Rotary Club of Blairgowrie and Blairgowrie & Rattray Community Council and their friends, came together, suitably socially distanced, to undertake a co-ordinated litter pick, at various locations across the town. The event was organised by Janine Seymour, working with members of the various groups.  Due to the challenges of the current situation, which meant the participants couldn't all gather together in one place as they would normally do: everything had to be organised beforehand with people, locations and equipment allocated to specific groups. 

To encourage a little bit of competition and fun, the Rotary Club of Blairgowrie offered a number of prizes. A number of plastic bottles, with eco messages, were secreted within each of the areas, with the lucky finders being rewarded with eco friendly bottles (all were found). There were also 4 'litterary' prizes for the largest object found, the most useful, something you could wear and the strangest object.

The groups covered the Riverside, Wellmeadow, Meeting Place, Welton Road, Parkhead, Golf course Road, Coupar Angus Road, Woodlands Road, Brucefield Road, Elm Drive and Piggy Lane. Overall the volunteers filled nearly 50 bags of rubbish. 

Janine said "we would have liked to have given an open invitation to everybody in the community but unfortunately the current restrictions meant we had to restrict numbers and have everything organised ahead of the event. It was a great turnout from the groups involved and I would like to thank them all. Hopefully, in the not too distant future, we can organise another event for the community when restrictions are lifted."

Phil Seymour, Chair of Blairgowrie & Rattray Community Council and President Elect of the Rotary Club of Blairgowrie, said "It is disappointing that at a time when the challenges we all face at present have, in many ways, created more of a sense of community, that people show a total lack of respect for the beautiful neighbourhood in which they live by irresponsibly discarding items they no longer want rather than putting them in a bin or taking them home to dispose of them."
