The title member Keith Dabbs gave to his talk today, “Something different”, left us all wondering what he was actually going to talk about. He mentioned the Bishop of Chelmsford’s appearance on Desert Island Discs earlier in the week but did not explain whether that led him to talk about the eight records he would take with him to a desert island.
His first choice was “The Slow Train” by Flanders and Swann, a well-known comedy duo from the 1950s and 1960s. The song, which is sung very slowly, is an evocation of the country railway stations axed by Dr Beeching.
His second choice was a piece by George Melly. Keith recalled him starting his live performances by declaring “Lock up your daughters, lock up your sheep, naughty George his here!”
Keith’s other choices revealed his wide taste in musical styles and included “Finlandia” by Sibelius.
