On the evening of Friday, 13 January 2023, we ran the 2022-23 Chelmsford heat of Young Musician at St Cedd’s School. An enthusiastic audience saw performances by five instrumentalists and three singers between the ages of 12 and 17. There should have been six instrumentalists but unfortunately one had to pull out just two hours beforehand because he tested positive for Covid.
Each competitor played or sang for around ten minutes. All performances were of a very high standard.
After everyone had performed there was an interval while the adjudicators, Peter Cross and James Davy, retired to discuss their conclusions. The Rotary Club of Chelmsford Rivermead provided tea, coffee and biscuits. The interval gave us an opportunity to chat and meet old friends.
James and Peter then returned to give general feedback and announce the names of the two winners. The winning instrumentalist was violinist Sophia Yang and the winning singer was Murray Peat. Both are now eligible to go forward to the District Final on Saturday, 18 February. The President of the Rivermead Club presented every performer with a certificate and the Mayor of Chelmsford, Cllr Sue Gibbons, presented the winners with their trophies. Our thanks to our adjudicators, St Cedd’s School and everyone else who helped to make this such an enjoyable and successful evening.
{Update: Murray Peat won the Vocalist category at the District Final on 18 February and will now go through to the Regional Final on 18 March.]
