Progress has been made in resolving the issues restricting water flow from some of the wells.

Progress Made

Club member Rev. Margaret Fowler recently returned from another visit to Embu, Kenya, the sixteenth year of her trips there.

She planned to visit some primary schools where we have built borewells and catch up on students who are sponsored at various senior schools there, but she started with a three day Safari at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy close to Mount Kenya!

Borewells

Some of the borewells we had built in our project had not been working properly, so we wanted to know how effective repairs had been. Margaret visited schools at Magaca, Kathanguri, and Kathanjuri accompanied by Rtn Peter Mbogo of the Rotary Club of Embu.

They were very warmly welcomed wherever they went, always being offered refreshments, sometimes having to eat six times a day!

  • St Paul’s Magaca - The original borewell dried up and needed to be dug deeper to provide water all year round. This is complete and it is fully functional.
  • Kathanguri - This is a remote small school of only about 80 pupils. The first pump was stolen and had been replaced but, despite being locked down, the second pump has also been stolen.  The Rotary Club of Embu is looking at how funds can be raised to replace the pump again and to securely install it in a housing to protect it from further theft.
  • Kathanjuri - A very large school of around 600 pupils. This borewell had also dried up and has now been dug deeper to provide enough water even in the dry season.  The excavated rock had been used for the foundation of a new classroom floor. Now, thanks to a reliable water flow, the school has planted many crops which are growing well.
