Rotary Club of Billericay has staged three recent major events to give retiring President Ed Harrison a resounding send-off after his successful and innovative year before he stands down in July. On the Sunday of the Southend Air Show, President's Day, thanks to the efforts of the incoming president Malcolm was marked by Club Members and guests sailing from Tilbury on the Thames barge "Hydrogen" and anchoring off Southend for four hours to watch the show at close hand. This included a spectacular display by the Red Arrows whilst the "Hydrogen" crew provided coffee and biscuits in the morning, a hot lunch (brilliantly cooked in the barge's small galley) and afternoon tea and cakes before returning to Tilbury.
Sunday June 5, the annual "Big Band in the Garden" defied the late rain to stage a wonderful party in the grounds of Peter Strong's beautiful garden, Ivy Cottage in Common Road. Members and friends danced to the music of "Swing Express", a 15-piece band and vocalist and even created a new routine which shall ever be know as "The Umbrella Dance" as people swept around the lawn to the music with brollies held aloft
