End Polio Now

Rotary has been instrumental in helping to eradicate Polio world wide. Read how the Rotary Club of Derby supports this life-saving project.

Rotary is an International community that brings together leaders, locally and globally. The eradication of polio is one of our longest standing and most significant efforts. Along with Rotary's partners, we have helped immunise more than 2.5 billion children against polio in 122 countries. We have reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent worldwide and we won't stop until we end the disease for good.

So far this year there have only been two reported cases of Polio around the world, one in Pakistan and one in Afghanistan. This is an amazing feat but we have to keep up the highly intensive vaccination process for a few years after the last case has been reported to ensure that it doesn't return.

We are so close.

The Rotary Club of Derby, supports the End Polio Now program and fundraises and promotes the need for eradication. This year we have concentrated on supporting local groups to plant crocuses in local parks, creating beautiful displays of purple crocuses. Last year we giften crocus corms to the Darley Park Wildlife Gardeners and this year they will be joined by The Friends of Alvaston Park, The Friends of Spondon Parks, The Friends of Normaton Park and The Friends of Derby River Gardens.

The crocuses that the club purchases raises money for the End Polio Now programme and this is match funded twice, by Rotary International and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In total we will be providing 4000 crocus corms across the City.
