Rotary Bakewell – Youth Activities

We have a very hard-working team committed to supporting all young people in Bakewell and the surrounding district. These are some of the on-going schemes:

Young Citizen of the Year Award: candidates are selected from nominations from schools, organisations or individuals and receive a trophy and local recognition. This could also lead to the youngster going on to Rotary’s national presentation

Youth Award Scheme where we support a young person who wishes to further their education or career in another country – which often results in them becoming an ambassador for Rotary.

Young Leader Award ( known as RYLA ): A weekend organised in November for 6^th form students and in May for years10/11 at Whitehall near Buxton which provides an opportunity for showing leadership skills whilst engaging in outdoor activities such as kayaking, rafting, caving, hiking. The participants visit our Club afterwards to give a presentation of their experience.

School Debate: 2 or 3 schools meet annually to debate a topic of their choice in teams of 4 ( junior and senior ). Adjudicators judge the speakers and the winning teams are presented with an award.

Well-Dressing Competition: each year a number of schools/organisations dress a well local to them – ideally with minimal adult help – and our committee members visit each site during the summer and judge the wells looking at a variety of criteria including natural objects used, colour, design and impact. Winning entries are rewarded financially and all receive certificates.

Kids Out: is a national event for Rotary when special needs or disadvantaged children are given the opportunity for a day out to a theme park or similar accompanied by their carer but paid for by Rotary

Other Rotary Clubs offer other competitions such as Young Chef, Young Photographer, Young Musician etc – so opportunities for young people abound through our organisation and we do what we can to support these ventures.

All of these activities cost the Rotary Club money and so we have various fund-raising/social activities to do this including concerts, croquet days and other fun evenings.
