Weston Rotary - Who are we?

We are Volunteers - Like minded men & women meet weekly to socialise, have fun and help our community. Do you want to Volunteer? Come and Volunteer with us.

The Rotary Club of Weston-super-Mare

Who we are: our members are men and women who are connected to Weston-super-Mare – we live, work or run a business here (sometimes all three!). We meet together for friendship, fellowship and networking. We help each other and collectively we help others by serving our local community.

How we serve: we do all sorts of things throughout the year, such as the Easter Party for around 100 elderly residents of the town; joining other Rotary Clubs for Kids Out! which involves taking busloads of special children to Longleat for the day; running our annual Charity Golf Tournament (this raises around £10,000 for our charity fund); a new fundraising event for us on the Beach Lawns - The Weston Rotary Dog Day ; marshalling events such as fun runs and sponsored walks. We also organise an annual Charity Fair, enabling local community groups and charities to set out their stall and advertise themselves and the work they do.

What we offer:

Friendship – we all need fellowship, and this is the first reason that Rotary began (in America in 1905)

Business development to succeed in business we need to network, and this is the second reason for Rotary’s establishment over 100 years ago.

Opportunity to serve – Rotary is a service club with the aim of helping others. Rotarians      provide community service to local and international communities. Our reward is fellowship, fun and the satisfaction of knowing that we make a positive difference to our fellow earthlings.

Personal development – every week and at various events Rotary develops your personality, social skills and people skills.  Rotary is for people who like people.

Leadership – we each serve in various Rotary positions and this helps us to learn how to motivate, influence and lead our fellow Rotarians, all of whom are leaders in their own businesses.

Citizenship – membership of Rotary helps you to be an active community citizen.

World citizenship – Every Rotarian wears a pin badge that says “Rotary International”. There is a Rotary Club in nearly every place in the world. Every Rotarian is encouraged to attend any of the 29,000 clubs in 194 nations and regions – instant friends wherever you go.  Your partner/spouse is always welcomed too.

Assistance when travelling if you need a doctor, lawyer, hotel or advice while away    from home then local Rotarians will help you.

Learning - each week at the Rotary meeting there is information about the community, the country and the world.  Often there is an invited speaker on a timely topic.

Fun, fun, fun – everything we do is intended to be fun, and we enjoy everything we do. Service is fun!

Public speaking – apparently the most common fear in the world! Rotary develops confidence and skills in public communication and the opportunity to practice them in a friendly environment.

Entertainment – every Rotary club and district has parties, activities, conferences, conventions and events that provide diversion in our business lives.

Young people – Rotary provides one of the world’s largest youth exchange programmes as well competitions and activities in schools to develop the Rotarians of tomorrow.

Vocational skills – Rotarians are expected to help to grow and develop their own profession or vocation, by serving on committees or teaching young people about their job.

Ethics – we practice a 4-Way Test that governs our ethical standards, requiring us to be ethical in business and personal relationships (legal, decent, truthful and honest).

Cultural awareness around the world, practically every religion, country, culture, race, creed, political persuasion, language, colour and ethnic identity is found in Rotary. We are a cross section of the world’s most prominent citizens from every background. As Rotarians we learn about, respect and work together with people everywhere, becoming better citizens of our country in the process

Prestige – Rotarians are prominent people: leaders of business, professions, art,      government, sports, military and religion: people who make decisions and influence policies that affect us all. Rotary is the oldest and most prestigious service club in the world.

Nice and important – Rotarians are nice, and important. We are people who agree it is nice to be important but it is better to be nice.
