My Life as an Auctioneer
Once again for the first Monday we met at the Crown for
supper and an extremely entertaining evening.
Local auctioneer Gordon Brockman joined us for the first Monday of the month at
The Crown. First he teased us with a min antiques road show, where a few
members presented him with prized treasures for comment and off the cuff
valuations. Not all, but one or two expectations were dashed!!
Post supper Gordon regaled us with tales from the auction room including a
challenge of having to guess the relative values of some antiques he produced
from the depths of his brief case. All in all an great evening and we’ll almost
certainly be taking up on Gordon’s offer to return later in the year and run a
full ‘antiques road’ show evening for the club.
February’s Business Meeting at the Wells Museum
The evening started with a cheque presentation to Paul from Winston’s Wish. The money was raised at the Santa Fun run back in Dec. Paul gave us a summarised update on both the work of the charity and his sponsored walk and will be back with us in the autumn (ahead of the next Santa Fun Run) to give members a fuller update.
Over the years the club has been an active supporter of Shelter Box. Knowing that there had been lots of change and development at the charity we were pleased to welcome Alice Byron along to tell us all about it.Still actively sending survival equipment to natural and man made disasters around the world in the traditional boxes, Shelter Box has added the concept of ‘virtual boxes’ to its programme. The virtual boxes contain relief equipment tuned to the specific nature of the disaster.
Following a very interesting and informative slide presentation the club voted to make a further donation to Shelter box of £1,000.
Next to take the floor was Ray to update members on discussions he had had with the head master of St Benedict’s school with respect to the Kids Out programme. Ray advised that he was comfortable about how the day would be organised and, with this assurance along with confirmation that the cost of hiring the buses would be within budget, the members present confirmed full support for the project.
At Club Council the proposed project plan for the club to support Wells City Harriers in organising this years Festival of Running was reviewed and endorsed for recommendation to members. Following a presentation on the plans the members present gave over whelming support to Council’s recommendation and the project proposal was endorsed. The hard work now starts.
Just to ensure a full and busy evening all of this was followed first by an update by Sharon on where discussions had progressed with respect to the Meet the Sikhs event and second by an update on the plans for the upcoming exhibition and auction of post card art (see the page on Supporting Wells Museum on club’s Home Page).
Concorde Museum Visit
Organised by Andy for the end of the month, ten members of the club met up at Aerospace Bristol for a guided tour led by Bob Harris around the exhibits followed by lunch proved a great day out for those able to make it. To squeeze everyone plus Concorde into the picture, Angela had to switch to ‘pan mode’ , hence Concorde is a little curved in the photo.
And the Big Surprise
A well kept secret by Claire and Chris.
They quietly organised a big birthday party at the Town Hall, they then surprising us all by announcing that they had tied the knot that morning and were now officially Mr & Mrs B.
Well done both and congratulations from all.
