The Month That Was That Was May 24

A very big welcome to our newest member – Neil Smallwood from all at the club. Its been quite a year for Wells Rotary, with seven new members, one application in the pipe line and two others interested joining Rotary. Perhaps a reflection on the energy and enthusiasm of all in the club – together we are making a difference.

Rotakids in St Cuthbert’s Junior School

The big new this month is that very shortly we hope to announce the chartering of our first Rotakids club for children aged between 7 and 12. The club is in St. Cuthbert’s Junior School, Wells with 29 members already and a waiting list. Introducing children at a young age to Rotary creates an awareness of volunteer work and service above self, something they will carry with them throughout life. Well done to Sharon and team.

Guest Speaker

We were honoured to have Bishop Michael visit our club and give a talk about his experience at the Coronation and how the King and Queen were throughout rehearsals and on the day.

Pickleball

Richard and Sue have not only started but attracted quite a few Rotary members and their partners to - Pickleball. This is a new game played in an indoor court like tennis and badminton. The next Olympics’ sport??.

International Convention in Singapore

A number of club members attended the conference this year in Singapore, joining thousand of other Rotarians attending from 110 different countries. It was an amazing sight to see so many Rotarians with the same passion to do good and make aa difference in the world.

Paul Harris

To his surprise, Tim Pollard was presented with the Paul Harris Fellowship for his long service of 50 years in Rotary. The honour was established in 1957 to show appreciation for service above self. Tim has been a great asset to Wells Rotary over the years and the award is well deserved. Congratulations, Tim!

Waverley Trip

Our social outing this month was a steam train ride to Minehead, sitting in an old-fashioned carriage watching the countryside roll by. After a few hours free to have lunch and look around we found our way to the Waverley Paddle steamer which (it was planned) would take us along the Bristol Channel back to our cars. Sadly the Paddle steamer had problems with its mooring ropes and together with the change of weather we had to complete our journey by road.

Lands End to John O’Groats for Motor Neurone Disease

Peter, who recently lost his wife Maureen to the disease, and who is a member of the Beverley Rotary Club, is cycling from Lands’ End to John O’Groats for MND raise awareness and money for research.

We hosted them overnight as they passed through Wells and gave them a send-off from the Crown Hotel after a coffee and bacon buttie. We are pleased to have raised £150 for MND.
