The Mendip Way
Forty-five years ago the Rotary Clubs of Wells, Weston-super-Mare, Wrington Vale and Mendip devised and waymarked the West Mendip Way to commemorate the Queen’s Silver Jubilee.
In the intervening years the East Mendip Way was devised by Mendip Ramblers and others.
To commemorate the Queens Platinum Jubilee the original West Mendip Way Rotary clubs and the clubs along the East Mendip Way agreed to rebrand and relaunch the two walks as “The Mendip Way”, making a single long-distance path of 50 miles.
This involved carrying out a survey of the whole route from Uphill to Frome, recording the condition of the route together with the signage and making a photographic record. This now forms a data base for planning future maintenance work.
It was an easy decision, given the support that The Trustees of the Wells Museum gave the project, to mount the plaque commemorating the creation and opening of The Mendip Way at the iconic building in the centre of Wells that is their home. The design reflects the plaque on the Cheese and Grain in Frome which marks the end of the walk.

Conscious of the need for rapid access to defibrillators following a coronary event, Wells Rotary has been working to make these life-saving machines available to the public at all times. It is an ongoing project.
