ShelterBox is the Cornish charity, the brainchild of Rotarian Tom Henderson OBE, which provides emergency shelter and lifesaving supplies for families around the world who are affected by disasters at the time when they need it the most.
The charity, whose headquarters are in Truro, is now firmly established at the forefront of disaster relief and their work constantly earns the respect of outside agencies.
Each large, green ShelterBox is tailored to a disaster but typically contains a disaster relief tent for an extended family, blankets, water storage and purification equipment, cooking utensils, a stove, a basic tool kit, a children’s activity pack and other vital items. Smaller kits are also available giving immediate relief to those affected.
Their goal is to help 50,000 families, who lose everything in a disaster, every year.
The Rotary Club of Tiverton regularly raises funds for this international charity and many Rotarians worldwide are involved in the hands-on assistance when disaster strikes. As an example the Club raised several hundred pounds a while back from a collection outside Marks & Spencer in Tiverton for the Carribbean disaster and this was sent on to the ShelterBox team.
