Club visit to Rosemoor Gardens

Rosemoor is a beautiful 65 acre garden set in the magnificent Torridge Valley of North Devon. The original 8 acre garden was created by Lady Anne Berry in a hillside setting full of flowering trees, shrubs, roses, bulbs and herbaceous plants.

In 1988 Lady Ann gave the garden, together with a further 32 acres, to the Royal Horticultural Society.

A new National Garden has been created here by the RHS but Rosemoor still retains the distinctive style developed by Lady Anne over 30 years.

The mature planting around Rosemoor House and the adjacent arboretum are joined to the new Formal Garden by a winding gorge planted with ferns and bamboos. This leads through the stream and bog gardens to an enchanting lake at the bottom of the garden.

The Terrace, planted for summer colour, provides views over the Formal Garden and the Fruit and Vegetable Garden to the River Torridge beyond.

The Formal Garden contains two coloured themed gardens lying side by side - the 'hot' Square Garden and the 'cool' Spiral Garden.

The two formal rose gardens contain 2,000 roses in 200 varieties.

Other features of Rosemoor include extensive herbaceous borders, a Winter Garden, a Herb Garden and Potager, a Foliage and Plantsman's garden and a Cottage Garden.

Rosemoor Garden also has a Visitors Centre with a Lecture Hall, restaurant, shop and plant centre with many rare and interesting species on sale.

The Gazebo

The Gazebo was once a part of Palmer House in the centre of Great Torrington. Mrs Palmer was the favourite sister of Sir Joshua Reynolds who often visited there, once famously with Dr. Johnson. This small building figures in some of Sir Joshua's paintings and one understands why because it must have been a most pleasant and comfortable place in which to work. Because of its dilapidated condition and due to the changes in ownership of the grounds of Palmer House the drastic solution was adopted of moving the gazebo to an entiretly new location. With the agreement of the planners and Royal Horticultural Society it was taken apart, conserved and rebuilt using the original components in the lovely grounds of RHS Rosemoor some 2 miles distant from its original site
