TWO inspirational Ulverston sisters are the first winners of the Philip Broadley Memorial Trophy. The trophy was purchased from part of the money donated following Philip's untimely death in late 2011.
Club past president Hugh Whittam proposed Milly and Alice Pyne to be the first winners, and along with their parents they were invited to a club meeting to receive the Memorial Trophy. Dorothy is pictured here with the trophy flanked by Milly(left) and Alice (right) with Mum and Dad standing behind.
Alice is 16 and for the last 5 years has been fighting what very sadly seems to be a losing battle with cancer. She has been very positive about it however and drew up a wish list "Alice's Bucket"
and in her blog says she has now completed all the do-able things on it.
She has been the driving force behind "Alice's Escapes", a charity which is raising funds to provide free holidays in Cumbria for families with seriously ill children. They are hoping to be able to purchase a static caravan very soon but in the meantime their first family will be coming shortly for a holiday in other accommodation.
Sister Milly is the main fundraiser for the charity and both the girls were awarded BEM's in the last
Queen's Birthday Honours List. They were also recipients of Diana Awards, Alice gaining the Courage Award, and Milly the Champion Fundraiser Award.
Philip Broadley's wife Dorothy presented the trophy and Club President Philip Dearden presented cheques for the charity.
A visit to Alice's Bucket list revealed she had received an amazing 3,972,849 hits by August 8th.
Updated January 2013.
