Darwen Rotary was the only "Charity" organisation invited to put a stall on the 5th Annual Brass Band Hymn and March competition organised by the Blackburn with Darwen Brass Band held on the town square.
Bands came from across Lancashire, Yorkshire and Greater Manchester to compete in the open air in a competition judged simply on the sound of the music. The adjudicator was kept in a caravan with all the windows blanked off so he could not be influenced by anything but the music. Each band was introduced simply by number so he could have no knowledge of their identity while listening to their performance.
Despite heavy thunderstorms early morning and more predicted for the afternoon, the weather was comparatively benign with only a few light showers.
Rotary had been invited to put on a stall as a result of their work organising the Rotary Charity Day on the Town Square in May.
Besses Boys’ Brass Band were resplendent in uniforms with the Rotary logo showing their sponsorship by their local Rotary Club.
