COMMUNITY AND VOCATIONAL COMMITTEE
This Committee centres on organising various initiatives to help both the local and wider community. Its current activities include:-
a) Calvert Trust
Every year a disabled person along with a carer is selected to go to the Calvert Trust Centre at Bassenthwaite in the Lake District, for a one week activity holiday. It is adventure based and provides the person with opportunities to take part in activities that normally they would be unable to participate.
b) RYPEN
One or two young persons are selected each year from local secondary schools to take part in a week long course to help them build their confidence and leadership skills.
c) Life Education
This organisation, which visits both primary and secondary schools in the town to educate children in healthy living, is supported financially and members help with the moving of the caravan to and fro to the schools. The ultimate aim of the organisation is to educate children away from drugs and toxic substances
d) Rotakids
Members help to organise Rotakids in local primary schools. These are mirror images of an adult Rotary Club which give children in years 5 and 6 an opportunity to understand cooperation and to see how society works. Recently a new initiative has been pioneered introducing children to engineering. The first school in the UK to experience this was Ashleigh.
e) Wrap Up Lancashire
For the 2nd year running Rotarians in Lancashire are collecting your old, unwanted coats and giving them to charities that support the homeless, refugees, children living in poverty and people fleeing domestic violence (to name a few).
Any size, style, colour of men’s, women’s and children’s coats will be greatly appreciated.
All donations will then be sorted and delivered to our nominated charity partners, for distribution to those in need just in time for winter.
Help us keep vulnerable people warm this winter by donating a coat this Winter!
f) Darwen Tower Restoration FindDarwen Rotary is currently raising £100,000 towards the cost of refurbishing the iconic Jubilee Tower on the hill above Darwen. This was built by public subscription to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. Time and the weather have taken their toll and the tower is in urgent need of repairs and restauration.
g) Visits
Occasional visits are made to places of interest by members to help extend their knowledge of our varied society.
Members are encouraged to initiate new ideas for the committee to consider and if appropriate develop and take forward
