It is very gratifying that we have had our AGM and now have President Elect Nicki, 1st Vice President Ian and a 2nd Vice-President, Norman.
I was very impressed by the report given from the dispatch box by our treasurer Ellis who set out his budget figures in a way that would have done justice to any Chancellor of the Exchequer.
We approved our subscription for next year at £110 plus a voluntary charitable donation of £30. Ellis pointed out that the increase is entirely the result of increases in Rotary GB&I and District capitations.
It was with regret that we heard of the resignation of Ken Patton who was having difficulty attending on a regular basis because of his business commitments.
I am taking this opportunity to reiterate my reminder that our two main fund raising events are fast approaching. On Friday 19th May we have the Golf Day and on Saturday 24th June it’s the Great Ferret Race. Please put the dates in your diaries and get ready to support and enjoy them in every way!
PRESIDENT DAVID
BLOOD BIKES
On 19th April we had Ian Beattie, treasurer of Blood Bikes Cumbria to tell us more about this charity.
Ian explained that Blood Bikes Cumbria offer a 24/7 service carrying blood, plasma, blood samples, x-rays and breast milk. They organise a scheduled run between Whitehaven Hospital and the Infirmary in Carlisle and another from the Infirmary to The RVI in Newcastle in conjunction with North-East Blood Bikes.
Since January 2015 they have been carrying blood to the Great North Air Ambulance depot in Langwathby as part of the ‘Blood on Board’ initiative.
The Blood Bikes are one of Vice-President Nicki’s charities for next year. They are also the charity supported by our District Governor Malcolm Baldwin who hopes to raise enough to buy two bikes, one for Cumbria and one for Lancashire, so it was with great pleasure that The Club presented a cheque for £500 to Ian.
As well as receiving a letter of thanks from Ian, we have received grateful thanks from the District Governor for our support and kind donation to Bloodbikes.
FOOTNOTE
Some may question consider whether the car’s registration number is appropriate!
Collection for Prostate Cancer UK
Ellis confirms that he has now received
confirmation that the amount collected at Brunton Park on 8 April for Prostate
Cancer UK was £801.20. Thank you very much for all your assistance towards
achieving this total.
ELLIS AMOS
GREAT NORTH AIR AMBULANCE
Kerry Steel, the Public Liaison officer for the Air Ambulance addressed our meeting on 26th April. The Air Ambulance was building a new main base at Stockton –on-Tees and this was in addition to their base provided free of charge by Frank Bird Poultry at Langwathby from where they cover Cumbria.
Their expenditure was about £5 million per year and about 21% of this was spent on fundraising and support.
Last year they attended 850 callouts and 36% of them were to road traffic accidents, 26% for medical reasons and 13% for sport and leisure.
A new development is their Blood on Board initiative where Blood Bikes deliver cool boxes to the Air Ambulance bases every day, enabling them to save more lives by giving blood transfusions at the roadside. Unused blood is returned to hospital every day and used in routine operations.
PRESIDENT’S NOTE Please don’t confuse this organisation with The North West Air Ambulance based in Liverpool who tend to cover Lancashire and South Cumbria, and worse still the Children’s Air Ambulance, based in Rugby, who actively make collections in Carlisle
Purple4Polio Jam
Each member of our Club should now have received their pot of jam and there will be a separate box on our Reception Desk for donations of your loose change in the empty jar.
Please fill in the amount of your donation on the sheet in the box so we can claim back the Gift Aid before sending the money to Purple4Polio.
Enjoy!

APPLEBY CHARTER
Three intrepid members recently braved the horse rustlers and other assorted rogues to attend the Appleby Club’s 52nd Charter AnniversaryDinner.
After enjoying the usual roast beef etc. we were treated to some remarkably short speeches form the District Governor and Appleby president Phil Walters. The guest speaker was Tracey Curtis Taylor who had attended school in the town. She related her adventures in emulating her heroine, Amy Johnson, by flying a Boeing biplane from England to Australia. Because of the current situation in several countries en route, she was unable to take a direct line but had to negotiate to overfly where she was not exactly welcome. We were shown a video which is part of a programme which will eventually reach our TV screens, including a spectacular crash on take- off from which she walked away unscathed.
An enjoyable evening and an opportunity for Ian, Malcolm and Mike to meet some folks they had not seen for some time.

THE FUTURE OF ROTARY IN CARLISLE
Many Rotarians are concerned about the future of our organisation and see one solution to be the formation of new clubs designed to appeal to younger generations.
The Rotary Club of Carlisle South decided by a 2/3rds majority to set up a Satellite Club and they plan to hold a Public Interest Meeting on Monday 22nd May at the Old Fire Station. About 30 people who have shown an interest in joining the club are to be invited to come along. They do not want the meeting to be overwhelmed by existing Rotarians.

FERRET RACING
JUNE 24th 2017
Marian is still looking for serious prizes to be auctioned and she is also looking for tombola prizes.
Marian will be selling tickets at our regular meetings, but they will soon be available at the Eden Valley Bookshop in The Lanes.
Potato Competition
5th July 2017
Good Friday, the traditional day for planting your specially selected first early potatoes has come and gone and a strange silence has emerged, nobody is talking about their potatoes, why the secrecy? Since the potatoes went underground so have the growers whom it seems want to keep all information under wraps. We have not experienced this in the past and wonder if there is an overwhelming desire this year to win and be awarded the privilege of organising the event next year and providing the first prize.
Past President Robin is currently very busy putting in place the final arrangements for our Charity Golf Competition on the 19th of May. When that is finished he will be devoting his attention to the judging of the potato competition.
We show a photograph of one of the competitors growing areas taken soon after the seeds were planted.
Good luck everybody.

Membership Challenge
Are you still up for the Challenge?
It is now weeks before the time expires.
This is not a hard challenge and only requires you to bring one guest to one meeting during the current Rotary Year 2016/2017.
A quick look at the visitors’ book reveals that we have had 38 plus visitors to date this year. Some will be speakers, some will be partners attending an evening meeting, some will be visitors from other clubs and some will be those guests invited by a member of our club in order to meet the challenge. Is your guest among the names recorded? Or did you forget to ask them to sign the book?
There are 9 meetings remaining in this Rotary Year and there are 59 blank spaces in the book to be filled before starting a new one.
Food for thought.
WISHING WELL
£269.51 was collected in the Wishing Well in April for the Great North Air Ambulance and the Club presented a cheque for £300 to Kerry Steel, the Public Liaison officer for the Air Ambulance.
The current collection is for Life Education,
Followed by One Great Day, Carlisle Key, Motor Neurone Disease, Hospice at Home, RABI, Blood Bikes, Samaritans, RBL Poppy Appeal, Animal Refuge.
PICTURE QUIZ
The answer is that the photo was taken at sunset on the Chobe River between Botswana and Namibia.
The elephant’s name was Nellie !
There were no winners!!
