DIARY DATES Reception Desk Club Events Club Council Club Meetings |
We were pleased to welcome Malcolm Baldwin, our District Governor to our meeting on Wednesday 17th August.
He brought us greetings from The Rotary Club of Accrington and asked if we would support his chosen charity, Blood Bikes, whom we have subsequently tried to contact without success.
He suggested that we continue our support of Rotary Foundation in their 100th year, and encouraged us to look for new members.
Internationally Rotary was continuing the campaign to eradicate Polio from the World and he asked that we write to our local MP to enlist his support for the campaign. Our secretary has now written to John Stevenson in the form suggested.
Malcolm congratulated our Club on the work that we did for our community, in particular that following the December 2015 floods. He pointed out that District still had £20,000 earmarked for flood relief and welcomed any proposals for beneficiaries.
It struck me that Malcolm was a very genuine person who deserved our support.
Rotary membership is a challenge throughout the UK and many other countries, but not, I understand, in India and Brazil. Ian Watson has come up with an excellent idea that each member should be challenged to bring one potential new member. There are more details of this later in this edition of The Borderer.
Enjoy what is left of the summer!
PRESIDENT DAVID
PRESENTATION TO HOSPICE AT HOME
Robin MacLeod presents a cheque for £2,000 to Elizabeth Hall as a representative and fundraiser for Hospice at Home Carlisle & North Lakeland. The money was raised at the charity golf tournament organised by The Rotary Club of Carlisle in May 2016.
The Club raised a total of £3,700 from the tournament and is also making a donation of £2,000 to Life Education Cumbria. This will be held at 8.45am on 20th September at Warwick Bridge School all early-rising members are invited to attend.
This photo was very professionally taken by our own Tony Wiseman. Please note that The Borderer is not frightened to publish pictures of cheque presentations!
CHARTER NIGHT
Our principal guest speaker our Charter Night on 30th November is to be Dr Stephen Gibbs, a lecturer at Huddersfield University.
Dr Gibbs is chairman of the Carlisle Flood Action Group whose mainobjective is to identify the most effective flood defence system and campaign for its earliest implementation. The Group is not very happy with the Environment Agency and the speed at which they are addressing Carlisle’s flood risks.
As a college lecturer he should be able to call upon a vast fund of stories.
Assistant District Governor Wendy Aldred will reply to the toast to RI, Rotary GB&I & District 1190.
DESIGN OF THE KIDSZONE BUS
Our members will remember that our Club contributed £1,000 towards a new minibus to replace that destroyed in the December 2015 floods this has now been purchased
Your President has replied, suggesting that the Rotary message could be clearer.
He refrained from commenting that it looked like the back of a bus.

THEATRE BY THE LAKE
Saturday 3rd September
A group of 19 including club members, wives and friends enjoyed a very nice meal at Morrells in Keswick.
That is, with the exception of one person who found his ice cream was too soft.
Then we had a damp walk down to the Theatre by the Lake.
‘Watch it sailor’ was the usual format of a farce with a loud domineering mother, a father who enjoyed his ferrets more than anything else and a sailor whose two weddings in one day were both cancelled with the usual hilarious consequences.
All together it was a very enjoyable evening.
ShelterBox Responds In Italy |
Following the deadly earthquake which hit Italy earlier this week, Rotary project partner ShelterBox has mobilised a response team and has headed to the quake zone. ShelterBox are working with local Rotarians in order to provide essential support and resources to the area. For updates from ShelterBox please keep an eye on its Facebook and Twitter feeds. Any information from Rotary in these Isles regarding donations will be shared in due course. |

Carlisle Great fair Proclamation
-History repeats itself
It pays to be up and about early in Carlisle city centre on a Saturday morning, especially the last Saturday in August when history repeats itself.
This year just after the Old Town Hall clock had struck 10 o’clock the voice of John Dawson the Town crier could be heard approaching from the lane leading from St Cuthbert’s Church. He shortly appeared into view closely followed by the parade of city councillors wearing their traditional purple robes and hats. They in turn were led by the Mayor of the city Colin Stothard flanked on each side by the macebearer and sword bearer.
At the Market Cross, the declaration originally granted to the citizens of Carlisle in 1352 by Edward 111 stating the city’s right to hold an annual fair in August was read out by the city council’s chief executive officer Jason Gooding in front of a gathering crowd. Immediate Past President Elizabeth can on this occasion be seen wearing a different badge of office. Following the ceremony the Mayor and councillors undertook a tour of the market stalls in the city centre.
We look forward to history repeating itself again next year

Aira Force to Glenridding New Ferry
Ullswater is a big lake and many of us will have travelled from Pooley Bridge to Glenridding via Howtown, but how many have travelled on the recently introduced ferry from Glenridding to the jetty near to the National Trust car park at Aira Force or vice versa?
Several of us recently travelled on the 10-30am sailing from Aira Force to Glenridding enjoying the 25 minute sail and then after a break for coffee walked back ,mostly off road, to the car park and then completing the walk with a climb up to High Force and return.
The car parking can be a little expensive for a long stay and it is best to arrive early in high season as it fills up very quickly. What better way to spent a day in the lakes
THE SUNFLOWER STROLL
We recently received a request from Hospice at Home to assist them with their Sunflower Stroll sponsored walk on Sunday 4th September with stewarding of the event.
After a deluge of rain during the previous night the weather that afternoon was fine and sunny which was ideal. Our stewarding team consisted of Simon, Tom, Julian, Ian and Barbara, myself and my daughter Lizzie. There were also a number of stewards helping from the Freemasons in Carlisle. We were all given stewarding posts to man and the walkers set off, many of them with their dogs in tow.
The route was from Dalston to Rose Castle and back on the same route. It would be fair to say that by the time the walkers arrived at Rose Castle they were fairly spread out but all made it back to the start. The event was sponsored by McVitties but all walkers were asked to raise their own sponsorship and at this moment in time the event has raised in excess of £4,000 for the Charity.
My personal thanks to those who helped and I hope that we may consider a similar support for another event in the future, whoever it is in aid of.

FUTURE OF ROTARY IN CARLISLE
A meeting of the Presidents and representatives of the Carlisle Clubs was called by Assistant District Governor Wendy Aldred on Monday 5th September to discuss the long term future of Rotary in Carlisle.
Much of the discussion centred round the appeal of Rotary to those aged 30-50. The Rotary Club of Maidenhead Bridge appeared to have a format which suited this age bracket. They have informal meetings at 10.30am on alternate Sundays in Costa Coffee and all committee work is done by email. Families and children are welcome.
This will be discussed by our Club Council at their next meetings.
Membership Challenge
Everyone likes a challenge; this challenge is the product of the Ian Watson think tank and has been endorsed by the Chairman of Membership committee.
Members are challenged to bring one new guest to a Rotary meeting during the Rotary year, to share in Rotary Fellowship as an introduction to Rotary and possible future membership.
One new guest to one meeting, as simple as that, Go for it!
PS Potential new members do not have to pay for their meal.
WISHING WELL
The Wishing Well was emptied in mid-August and £344.17 was collected. We will be sending a cheque for £350 to Susan’s Fund for action on brain tumours. The current collection is for The Samaritans.
Future collections are for:

ESSEX GIRLS
Five blokes in an Audi Quattro arrived at the ferry checkpoint in Harwich, Essex.
Tracey, in her brand new uniform, stops them and tells them:
"I can't let you on the ferry. It is illegal to have 5 people in a Quattro.
Quattro means four.
One of you will have to get out and stay behind."
"Quattro is just the name of the car," the driver replies
disbelievingly.
"Look at the papers: this car is designed to carry five persons."
"You cannot pull that one on me. This is Tracey you're talking to
here," she replies with a smile. "Quattro means four.
You have five people in your car and you are therefore breaking the law.
So I can't let you onto the ferry. It's more than my job's worth to let you all on."
The driver is now very cross and replies angrily,
"I've had enough of you. Call your supervisor over. I want to speak to someone with more intelligence!"
"Sorry," responds Tracey, "but Sharon is busy dealing with the
two blokes in the Fiat Uno".
DISTRICT VACANCIES
District need and are seeking Rotarians who will work with Clubs
to sustain and grow Rotary
District Treasurer - Nominations sought now for July 2017
Barry Stephenson has been treasurer for 7 years
Treasurer manages the District’s finances, sets the budget and presents at District Exec and Council twice a year. He/She has the Finance Committee, which meets 3 times a year, to support him/her
.
District Secretary - Nominations sought now for July 2017
Gil Riley will have been Secretary for 5 years in July and must now stand down. Gil assures us that being District Secretary is, in fact, easier than club secretary as the meetings he serves are 4 times a year rather than weekly.
Assistant District Secretary - Nominations sought now for July 2017
Tony Andrews has been a great Assistant Secretary servicing the Administration and Projects Committees. These happen 3 times a year supporting the DGN and DGE roles.
Rotaract Co-ordinators (North and South)
These roles are currently vacant but with a growing interest in Rotaract and with our Rotakids and Interact Clubs maturing we need to ensure we are prepared for the next step.
Membership Chair and Membership Champion Mary Bradley will have done 3 years in June and is stepping down to be DGE. She has combined the 2 roles but they could easily be split. Growing membership is key and the main aim is provide clubs with all the information and support they require.
International Chair
Derek Timms will have competed his 3 years in June for the 2nd time around, so it must be a good role to have! Derek and his committee, whichmeets 3 times a year, keep an eye on all the international projects and support clubs as requested. They can also link clubs together for the bigger projects.

PICTURE QUIZ
THE ANSWER
This rather nice photo by Editor Donald features The Gondola on Coniston.
The first to answer and winner of our competition was Nick Utting. Nick replied at 7.00am and the Editorial staff were strongly of the opinion that replies sent so early in the morning, long before sensible readers arose in the morning, should not be given an unfair advantage. Future competition entries will be put into a virtual hat.
THIS MONTH’S PICTURE QUIZ
Answers to David Morton who will place all the correct answers received before noon on Tuesday 20th September into the virtual hat and the first one drawn will receive a bottle of wine.
