On Thursday 9th January new member Mark Moran gave a job talk to members and guests of the Rotary Club of South Queensferry at the Hawes Inn. During a career in finance which led to a spell in the United States, Mark became very interested in the many craft micro-breweries which were springing up in California and on the east coast in places as far apart as Boston and Florida. He returned to Scotland with Jan, his American wife, determined to go into the brewing business. Mark found the perfect site at Braehead Farm Steading in Queensferry. The Ferry Brewery opened in 2016 and became the first brewery in Queensferry since 1851. The brewery features a taproom and shop and its award-winning beers are available throughout Scotland and England. The beers include Ferry Fair, Witches Brew and Ferry Stout which come in bottles. Increasingly Ferry Brewery is adopting cans for the more recent brews such as Forth Brig, 3 Bridges and Ferry Milkshake Porter.. The brewery also offers guided tours and tasting sessions in its Brewery Bar.
In a fascinating talk, Mark described the excitement at having founded a brewery and also the worries such as coping with covid restrictions and lockdowns. The Ferry Brewery has weathered the storm of the last two years and is now firmly established as part of the Queensferry scene.
President Sandy Mackenzie presented Mark with a certificate from the 'Rotary Brewery Appreciation Society' for being the Best Local Brewery in Dalmeny.
