On 19th May President of South Queensferry Rotary Derek Clerk welcomed members and guests to a virtual meeting. The evening's speaker, introduced by Neil McKinlay, was David Cunningham, CEO of Kids OR. This Scottish charity, founded by Nicola and Gareth Wood in 2018, focuses on aiding countries with critically low or even no facilities for children's surgery. It has offices in Edinburgh and Nairobi, Kenya, and supplies fully equipped operating rooms to surgeons in Africa and Latin America.
Kids OR believes every child deserves access to healthcare. Since 2018 the charity has installed fifty operating rooms, averaging 3,000 items each, allowing more than 60,000 children to access life-saving or life-changing care. By 2030, Kids OR aims to have more than doubled the number of operating rooms installed across Africa to 120, providing essential surgery to more than 635,000 children. Kids OR has a mock-up operating room in Dundee and a warehouse housing operating room equipment which can be shipped to wherever it is needed. The first Kids OR operating room was opened in Kampala, Uganda, and there are Kids OR operating rooms in twenty-three countries. Gordon McInally proposed the vote of thanks for a most inspiring presentation about a charity doing vital, though little-known work.
