Friends of Lord Hill's Column - Waterloo Weekend

News of events run by the Friend's of Lord Hill's Column - An unmissable lecture and Open Days for the Column.
On Friday 16th, at 1800, there will be a lecture at Shrewsbury Museum in the Square; the title being Mrs Coade and the Making of Lord Hill's Monument. The lecture is by Caroline Stanford, an historian and Head of Engagement with the Landmark Trust. She is an expert on Coade Stone. Tickets are available, £10 each to include a glass of wine and are available from the Visitor Centre in the Museum shop. There will also be an exhibition of Hill memorabilia at the museum.
Additional Note:
The column was paid for by public subscription and cost £5,973.13s 2d; the statue an additional £315. Straphen’s spiral staircase and remarkable cast-iron handrail bears a message from bottom to top with one letter on each and every baluster. It can be read clearly by visitors to the column today. The message reads:
‘This staircase was the gift of John Straphen, the builder, as his donation towards erecting this column. The first stone of the foundation was laid December 27th, 1814 and completed June 18th, 1816, the anniversary of the glorious battle of Waterloo.’
