Youth Speaks Round 1 @ Oswestry School

Tue, Nov 29th 2016 at 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm

First round of this year's Youth Speaks competition

The first round of this year’s Youth Speaks competition took place at Oswestry School on Tuesday evening 29th November 2016.

The schools who entered teams for the Senior competition (14-17 years) were Oswestry School (1 team), Moreton Hall (2 teams) and the Marches School (1 team).

In the Intermediate competition (11-13 years) entrants were Oswestry School (1 team) and Moreton Hall (1 team.)

Team members chose topics for their speeches that were thought provoking and allowed them to embrace this opportunity to speak to a selected audience.

Members from Oswestry Rotary Club and a Friend of the Rotary Club asked individual speakers a question relevant to the chosen topic and the speakers, in turn and without preparation, had to respond.  All students gave well considered, confident responses.

The winner of the Senior competition was Oswestry School with the topic ‘Down's Syndrome – to be not to be?’.

The winner of the Intermediate competition was Moreton Hall with the topic ‘Today’s Technology’.

The District round of the competition will be held at The Catrin Finch Centre, Glyndwr University, Wrexham on 3rd March 2017.

The judges were Mrs. Christine Hughes, Mrs Debbie Jones and Rotarian Mr. Mark. Liquorish.

My thanks to Mrs R. Huish and Victoria Evans from Oswestry School for allowing the use of the Peter Humphreys Centre and for all their support in making the evening a success.
