Steve Drinnan's speaker today is Dave Andrews author, with his wife Jane Trudgill, of "The Oswestry Round". Written to raise funds for the Lingen Davies Cancer Fund at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, where Dave received treatment last year, and for Cancer Research UK, the book gives directions for a 33-mile route which combines part of the historic Offa’s Dyke Path and the Montgomery and Llangollen canals to form a circular walk around Oswestry.
Dave, who has written a number of guides and contributed to articles on mountaineering, said: “We were really keen to repay the wonderful staff at the Lingen Davies Centre and I revived an idea for a book which first occurred to me about eight years ago, soon after I’d completed a round of the Munros, the mountains of Scotland over 3,000ft.”
Dave has written a number of guides to the mountains of Wales including The Welsh One Hundred and Welsh Mountain Walks, both published by Lolfa Press. He has also contributed articles on mountaineering to various publications in Welsh and English. In 2008 he completed his first round of the Munros, the 282 Scottish peaks over 3000 feet. In 2014 he completed the Welsh 3000ers challenge, visiting the summits of all 14 Welsh peaks over 3000 feet in one day. He has also walked in the mountain regions of Ireland, Greece, Switzerland, Italy, Norway, North America and Nepal.
Jane has provided photographs for a number of Dave’s books and articles. She too has extensive experience of hill walking in Britain and abroad and is particularly fond of the hills of the Lake District.
Together, Dave and Jane have also walked sections or the entire lengths of several long-distance paths in Britain such as the Pennine Way, the South-West Coast Path, Offa’s Dyke Path, the Coast to Coast Walk and the Wolds Way.
Looking further ahead and afield, Dave will also tell us about his next writing project 'From Gobowen to Everest' - let's hope he has a good pair of walking boots!
