Lunchtime Meeting - 12.45pm - Speaker Shropshire's Sacrifice

Mon, Feb 29th 2016 at 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

STOP PRESS: Unfortunately Andy McKeown will unavoidably be unable to attend today so we will have Claire Crackett to tell us about the Shropshire's Sacrifice project on her own.

Hazel's speakers today will be Claire Crackett (St Chad's volunteer) and Whitchurch animator Andy McKeown from the Shropshire's Sacrifice project.

Phil Morris, Neil Evans, and St Chad's Church, Shrewsbury, have produced a new Roll of Honour for the county of Shropshire, to commemorate the precious lives lost in The Great War.  A leather-bound Roll was presented to the Vice Lord Lieutenant, Col. Edmund Thewles on Remembrance Day 2014, who received it on behalf of the whole ceremonial county of Shropshire.

St Chad's Church, Shrewsbury, are also hosting special services on Wednesdays at 5pm to remember every single man and woman who made the ultimate sacrifice 100 years ago during the week of the anniversary of the centenary of their death.

This act of remembrance is also supported by a Twitter campaign (@WW1RestinPeace) run by Claire where details of the fallen are Tweeted to receptive Twitter accounts in their home area.  The details are then Retweeted and thus the names continue to be remembered.

As part of the project Whitchurch animator Andy McKeown has used Art to promote the cause and presented the Roll of Honour as a projected image on the Market Hall in Shrewsbury on 11 November 2015.  The Roll took over 7 hours to scroll and showed details of all 5,286 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Great War - as seen in the image below.

STOP PRESS :

As a special event at our meeting today, Andy McKeown will be inviting members to record the names and details of any of their relatives or family friends that appear on Shropshire's Roll of Honour.

Who will you remember today?

The Roll has also been placed on display in St Chad's church in a special oak lectern and copies will be presented to secondary schools and libraries in both Telford & Wrekin and Shropshire.
Copies are also available to the public at £15 softback and £30 hardback.

In addition to selling the Rolls of Honour, the entire work is available online here:
