Evening Meeting - 6.30-7.00pm - International Students Evening

Mon, Jan 19th 2015 at 12:00 am - 2:00 am

International Committee's annual evening with overseas students invited from local schools.

On Monday evening the 19th January a party of around 60 Rotarians, partners, International students and teachers gathered in the Dining Rooms for what has become one of the high points of the Rotary calendar - the International Students' Evening.

5 schools were represented, each bringing 3 students, and members of staff were on hand to organise and encourage their charges: The Marches Academy, Oswestry School, Ellesmere College, Moreton Hall and Adcote School. The countries represented were Hong Kong, the Philippines, Germany, the USA, Malta, France, Vietnam, Poland, the Ukraine and Nigeria and the ages ranged from 14 right up to 20!

Adcote Students with President David

After a very good dinner each young person took the microphone, one after the other, and made the experience unique, talking about their home country and the school to which they had come  - looking round at the faces of the adults you could see how  extremely impressed everyone was both with the excellent level of English and with the confidence it must take to get up in front of so many people and deliver a speech in a second language.  Each student brought something different with them but all were enthusiastic and loving their boarding experience, their teachers, their schools and the UK.  The only criticism any of them had was the weather!

Don Howard (supported ably by Joyce) had done a wonderful job of organising this memorable evening and President David Gordon paid tribute to all his hard work.  What a very special evening!
