On Monday evening the 17th November our Foundation speaker was Rotarian Hywel Williams from Wrexham Yale Club, who although being District 1180 International Committee Chair, was going to speak to us about applying for a Global Grant from the Rotary Foundation.
The Nepal Trust is a NGO set up in 1993 in Scotland by an ex-Army officer with the stated aim of "providing integrated rural development in NW Nepal". Hywel set the scene by giving us some facts and statistics about Nepal: Kathmandu is the capital, it is not covered with snow as popularly thought and is the 74th poorest country in the world with an average life expectancy of 54 years. Divided into 75 districts, the poorest of these is called Humla, bordering Tibet, and it is here that the Trust is attempting to improve the quality of life.
Home to 44,000 people and a 10-day trek from Kathmandu with no proper roads, Humla deserves the moniker 'the Hidden Himalayas' - its topography ranges in altitude between 1500 and 7300 m and life is harsh here. Life is hand to mouth, the caste system (now technically gone) still keeps people in poverty. The largest town is Simikot and there are efforts to establish tourism for visitors wishing to trek into Tibet, following the Great Himalayan Trail.
