We are lucky here in Britain to have had no case of polio infection for nearly 30 years because as children we are given the vaccine.
Until routine vaccination started in Britain 50 years ago thousands of British children had polio every year. It is a disease that can kill or paralyse; but it is also a disease that can be conquered.
Rotary decided, 26 years ago, that the time had come to ensure that EVERY CHILD in the whole world should have the vaccine.
That was no small goal but it would be worth it: once beaten for good polio can never return! 3 years after the last known case it will be safe to say that every last child (and every new child!) has had the medicine!
Rotary and other organisations soon joined forces to good effect. Worldwide cases of polio are down hugely, from 300,000 in 1985 to just 553 so far in 2011, and with more hard (and expensive!) work it is hoped to finish the job very soon indeed.
Last school year Bellan House children helped Oswestry Rotary Club plant 5000 crocuses in the name of End Polio Now in Cae Glas Park, Oswestry. On next World Rotary Day (Thursday 23rd February 2012) the whole school helped Oswestry Rotary Club again by taking part in a sponsored "Crocus Walk" to see the flowers (in full bloom if the growing season has been kind!) and to raise funds to help END POLIO NOW.
